JewishCare’s Big Brother Big Sister Program and Young Adult Mentor Program has hosted  in the Community Lounge in JewishCare’s new Bondi Junction headquarters to celebrate Youth Mentoring Week.

The evening was an opportunity to celebrate the commitment and achievements of the volunteer mentors on the program, and to launch a new video clip of a mentor and young person on the program. The theme of the evening was “Resilience”, the buzz word in Youth Mentoring at the moment. Michael Sluis, Program Manager at Black Dog Institute, was Guest Speaker at the event, and shared his insights into how to support young people to develop resilience.

Mimi Zilka, Manager of the Big Brother Big Sister Program, and Young Adult Mentoring Program, highlighted the importance for young people to have positive adult role models in their lives, to support them to navigate the sometimes rocky and confusing road through adolescence. “Mentors can play a vital role in being the charismatic adult in a child’s life, enabling the child to feel connected,  supported, and listened to”.
