Young Scholar to address AJHS meeting
Mark Rapport will speak on the topic An Old Feud Oft-Times Renewed: Orthodox and Liberal Judaism in Australia at a Australian Jewish Historical Society in Sydney.
Since Liberal (Reform) Judaism’s emergence in Sydney in the mid-twentieth century, it has largely experienced a fraught relationship with its Orthodox counterpart.
Presenting the results of his 2016 Honours thesis, Mark Rapaport explores the centrality of the notion of Jewish authenticity to this relationship.
His talk will also cover the attempts of both movements to ‘prove’ that they practiced a Judaism which had ‘always been’, a claim used often in an attempt to deny the legitimacy of the other.
