Yom Yerushalayim trivia night
Over 120 trivia buffs and Jerusalem lovers participated in the Zionist Council of Victoria’s Yom Yerushalayim Trivia Night.
Yom Yerushalayim, or Jerusalem Day, celebrates the reunification of Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967. The Trivia Night was an entertaining way to mark the day and provided participants in eleven teams the opportunity to test their knowledge of Jerusalem, share in some friendly competition and pick up a few new bits of trivia to use in the future.
In opening the evening at the Beth Weizmann Community Centre, Sam Tatarka, President of the Zionist Council of Victoria, spoke of the significance of Yom Yerushalayim. “Forty-eight years ago, Jerusalem was reunited allowing Jews to access our holy sites and to live, once again, within the Old City walls. It is a joy to have you here to celebrate and enjoy a fun evening together.”
Trivia night MC, Reuben Benkel, entertained and engaged the crowd throughout the evening. “The correct answer is NOT Richard Branson,” he said after a question regarding the British philanthropist who funded the first neighbourhoods outside the Old City walls (the correct answer is Sir Moses Montefiore).
Local Israel educator and tour guide, Erez Feinberg, provided context to the importance of the day with his “guided tour” of divided Jerusalem and its reunification.
The top three teams were all quite close with the top team, the Ein Kerem Crusaders, earning 55 of a possible 61 points. Each member of the winning team walked away with a voucher to Falafel Omisi.
It was evident everyone involved, even those not on the winning team, was enjoying the evening. Zvi Civins, a member of the third-place team the “Laybacks,” had this to say: “great night, great questions, great falafel and a lot of fun!”
The Yom Yerushalayim Trivia Night was presented by the Zionist Council of Victoria with the generous support of Magen David Adom and Hodges Real Estate.
