“The annual celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut provides an opportunity to recognise this important occasion, and to acknowledge the Jewish community’s contribution to Australia’s heritage and its impact on Australian history,” Mr Dominello said.

“The relationship between our two countries has a solid historical element, dating back to the First World War, and our close relations are strongly supported by Australia’s active Jewish community.

“On behalf of the New South Wales Government, I congratulate the Jewish community on celebrating Israel’s 64th National Day and I extend my wishes for a peaceful future to all,” Mr Dominello said.

Chair of the NSW Parliamentary Israeli Friendship Group Ms Upton said members of the Jewish-Australian community have contributed substantially to all aspects of NSW society.

“Australia established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1949, shortly after the declaration of the independent state of Israel, and was the first country to vote in favour of the 1947 UN partition resolution,” Ms Upton said.

“The intellectual and cultural life of NSW is significantly richer for the Jewish community’s contributions,” said Ms Upton.
