Yad Vashem head in Australia
Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan is in Australia for the first time since taking the helm of the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in August 2021.
This weeklong landmark visit spans Australia’s two major cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and includes an opportunity for Chairman Dayan to meet and discuss pressing matters of Holocaust remembrance and the alarming rise of antisemitism in Australia with key government officials, academic leaders and prominent figures from the Jewish community.
Dayan met yesterday in Sydney with Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales, and Jillian Segal, Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism. He also had a significant dialogue with Chancellor David Thodey of the University of Sydney and David Gonski, Chancellor of the University of New South Wales, focusing on academic collaboration and Holocaust education initiatives.
Dayan will also visit Melbourne, where he was invited to address at a special oration event hosted by the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. While in Victoria’s capital, he will meet with Jacinta Allan, Premier of Victoria, along with distinguished community leaders and academics.
Ahead of this visit, Chairman Dayan underscored the profound significance of engaging with Australian leadership and communities. “Bringing Yad Vashem’s mission to Australia marks an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to preserve Holocaust memory and combat antisemitism worldwide,” Chairman Dayan noted. “These partnerships are essential to advancing Holocaust education and remembrance on a global scale.“
