Would I lie to you! The beginning, or La verite si je mens! Les Debuts, is one of the many films playing at this year’s Jewish International Film Festival this year.

Focused around the Jewish garment manufacturing industry in Paris, the original movie was aired in in 1997, and nominated for two Cesar Awards. Three sequels and 22 years later, this fourth movie has morphed into a prequel. Set in the 1980’s, it focuses on the lives of teenagers Patrick, Yvan, Dov and Serge.

Dov is in his final year of high school and his mother expects him to go to university to be a pharmacist, but he has other ideas. Patrick and Yvan have opened a fledgling video business, whilst Serge keeps trying to find new ways to pass high school and seduce the popular girl.

The movie is a light-hearted French romp that focuses upon the boys taking their first steps in the wide world. Like in life, sometimes they are met with barriers which they find overwhelming and at other times they find ways to cross these barriers.

Would I Lie to You the beginning is not as witty as the original, however, it is the fourth instalment of the series. If history has taught us anything, it is often difficult to keep the momentum going after a few movies. Overall it is still a pleasant way to spend the evening with a few friends.
