Woollahra Council has passed a motion that no changes are made to the Council’s Procurement Policy that incorporate principles aligned with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions campaign.

Woollahra mayor Richard Shields and Councillor Isabelle Shapiro

This  is a response to the City of Sydney Council’s motion passed last month titled, “Report on City of Sydney suppliers and investments in relation to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign and Israel.”

The City of Sydney Council report will include recommendations on changes they may make“to ensure that Council is not purchasing from companies involved in weapons or human rights abuses”.

Woollahra Mayor Richard Shields said, “The concept of vilifying Jewish businesses or individuals is an insidious practice and was commonplace prior to the systematic murder of six million Jews in World War II.

Boycotts based on race, doxing individuals based on religion and fostering an environment where a minority group feels unsafe has no place in a modern pluralist democracy.”

Woollahra Council has previously expressed strong support for Israel at its 9 October 2023 meeting, condemning the “unprecedented and unprovoked attacks on the citizens of Israel by Hamas” and resolving to fly the Israeli flag at Council chambers to demonstrate solidarity with Israel.

The motion at the Woollahra Council was moved by Richard Shields and Councillor Isabelle Shapiro.
