UIA NSW Women’s Division hosted nearly 500 Sydney Jewish women at its 2018 events at the Four Seasons Hotel and Dunbar House, Watsons Bay to celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary. Guest speaker Ambassador Belaynesh Zevadia – the first Ethiopian Olah to become an Ambassador representing Israel headlined the events.

Born in Ambober, Ethiopia, Zevadia made Aliyah at 16 years old, graduating with a BA and MA from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. She was appointed as an Ambassador in 2012, after serving in Israel Consulate posts in America.

Zevadia spoke about her journey of growing up in Ethiopia; to making Aliyah; to speaking at UIA’s events in Australia: “My father told us if you work and study very hard, you’ll be someone. So when things are difficult for me, I pray and remember my father’s words. Throughout my life I have experienced the unknown, but have had success.”

UIA Women’s Division 2018 Campaign is once again focusing on supporting the program ‘A Profession for Life,’ and the Young Women’s Tikvah Division is supporting victims of terror.

UIA NSW Women’s Division Co-Chair Bev Michaelis said: “To quote Helen Mirren, ‘the great thing Israel has is Israelis’. So let’s toast and celebrate Israel’s greatest asset – OUR PEOPLE!”
