World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder has condemned the “senseless” attack that killed up to eight people in lower Manhattan on Tuesday, in what federal US authorities are treating as a terrorist incident.

“The World Jewish Congress unequivocally condemns the senseless act of terror that claimed eight innocent lives today in New York City. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and the families and friends of those whose lives were lost.

“It is beyond terrifying that such acts of indiscriminate violence and intimidation have become so familiar around the world, and to know that nobody is immune to such horror. We must stand together against those seeking to destroy our liberties and our way of life.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of New York, and trust that the city’s authorities will remain vigilant and do everything possible to prevent future threats of this kind.”
