Sky News has reported that feelers have been sent to students and academics at Sydney University ahead of a prospective legal action alleging antisemitism against the institution.

Adam Butt, the barrister who successfully represented four Melbourne Jewish students who had been bullied through antisemitism at Melbourne’s Brighton Secondary College and took the Victorian Government to court, will be briefed.

Sky News reported that lawyers “will be filing a representative action in the federal court seeking damages against the University of Sydney and others for breaches of the racial discrimination act”.

This follows incidents involving Jewish students and academics after the October 7 massacre.

The University of Sydney has responded to the Sky story saying: “We never tolerate any form of racism, hate speech, threatening speech or unlawful harassment, including antisemitic or Islamaphobic language or behaviour.

Since the conflict in the Middle East began, we have taken a number of steps to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all, and have been very clear about our expectations of behaviour on our campuses. We have taken appropriate disciplinary and other action when our behavioural expectations have not been met.

If anyone in our community experiences or witnesses inappropriate behaviour, or feels unsafe or needs support, we urge them to let us know so we can investigate and take any appropriate action, and provide support.”
