Eldar, 69, was visiting his extended family in Point Piper, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, when he was hit by a car allegedly driven by rock star Jon Stevens.

The high-profile veteran journalist has undergone surgery on his right arm and left leg. Further surgery will delay his return to Jerusalem.

Eldar, who wrote for Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz for many years, was visiting his brother-in-law, property developer Danny Avidan and his fashion designer wife, Charlie Brown. He was on his way to visit his mother-in-law when the incident occurred.

Stevens has issued a statement to Channel Nine saying he was “devastated”.

“I hope the gentleman is OK, police and paramedics assured me he is but I’ll be checking in to make sure. It was just an accident. “ said Stevens.
