The deputy mayor of Sydney’s Waverley Council has voted against a motion condemning the Hamas October 7 attack.

William Nemes

But deputy mayor Ludovico Fabiano is not the only Greens councillor who voted against the motion. Longtime councillor Dominic Wy Kanak also voted against the motion raised by Councillor William Nemes (Liberal) and seconded by Councillor Steven Lewis (Labor).

However, Greens Councillor Elaine Keenan supported the motion.

The motion made mention that the Municipality of Waverley ‘has the largest number of Jewish residents of any local government area within NSW’.

Councillor Nemes told J-Wire that he was shocked at the two Greens councillors who voted against. He has called for the resignation of the deputy mayor. He said: “If he was to do the right thing, he would judt resign and no longer be deputy mayor. I bekieve his position in untrenable.”

The motion also called for ‘financial and in-kind support to the Jewish community of Waverley in any way it can including, but not limited to, a budget of $10,000 funded from the General Manager’s operational budget which Jewish community organisations within Waverley can access to support their work in offering social services to those impacted by the recent attacks’.

J-Wire understands that the Waverley Council’s position of deputy mayor is not mandatory.

Local Government councillors are not Commonwealth MP’s so they should stick to picking up the rubbish, cleaning the streets and maintaining parks etc.

      100? Adrian Jackson.
That is why inserting amendments of “war crimes” and “right wing Israeli Government” concerns by 2 of the 3 greens in Council was way beyond their purview and way beyond their responsibilities.
So in a democratic unified vote by ALP, Liberal and a Green—this individual was removed as Deputy mayor–as the community which spawned him-demanded.
Well done Waverley Council for listening to the pain and anguish of their own ratepayers, and then acting on them!

  2. Adrian Jackson says:

Foreign Affairs is not a council matter anyway.

  3. Libby Silver says:

I expect Council members to maintain Nuetrality at the very least
otherwise condemn the evil perpetrated by Hamas.
There can never be any justification for these barbaric inhuman actions.
You either have the guts to stand against evil or you do not.

  4. Bo Margo says:

Cr Will Nemes forgot to mention in his press release (evident in the meeting’s minutes) that Fabiano and Wy Kanak supported the motion but also wanted to include an amendment calling to stop of all violence on both sides of the conflict. However, Liberal Crs and Labors ones refused to do so and kept it one sided. Nemes and his partners planned, executed a wedge and then gave false report to the press who is not doing journalist work but using press releases without fact checking.

  5. Roger Mendelson says:

Basically, councils should stick to garbage collection and drains. International politics has nothing to do with them. They aren’t qualified for it and weren’t elected for it.

  6. Victor says:

I have written to the Councillors who were unfavourable asking for the facts and circumstances they have relied upon
I suggest they receive a barrage of respectful letters. Aggression is counter productive. Education is the safest path l. I am glad to assist and provide my draft
