Federal Labor MP Michael Danby has  asked fellow Labor MP Mark Dreyfus and Liberal MP Josh Frydenberg to join him in petitioning Minister for Communications Malcolm Turnbull to have Australia produce a commemorative Raoul Wallenberg stamp on the milestone anniversary of his heroic actions marking the the 70th anniversary of his disappearance.

Danby said: “We believe it would be a fitting tribute to a man that ultimately gave his life to a conflict where he stood alone in his ability and achievements in saving others.”

January 2015 will mark the 70th year since the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg was kidnapped in Budapest and later murdered by Soviet Secret Police. Wallenberg had carried out the single largest life-saving operation of Jewish people against Hitler’s Nazis. Wallenberg, using his Swedish neutral status, managed to save around 100,000 Jewish people in Hungary. Many of those he saved migrated to Australia and have lived productive and creative lives, such as the late Les Erdi & Frank Lowy. Wallenberg’s method of issuing manufactured documents and providing shelter for Jewish people put his own livelihood at considerable risk and for that the Jewish people will be forever grateful. At the Port Phillip Town Hall I told a local audience about Wallenberg’s mission in Budapest: http://www.danbymp.com/recent/2018-raoul-wallenberg-a-paradigm-of-the-righteous.html

Thankfully, the courage and work of Raoul Wallenberg’s has been widely acknowledged within Australia. Only last year we proudly sat in Government House when former Prime Minister The Hon Julia Gillard together with former Governor General, The Hon Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO, granted Raoul Wallenberg Australia’s first honorary citizenship in recognition of the thousands of lives he saved in the face of ultimate evil.
