The Melbourne-based Jewish Care has crossed the border into New South Wales donating $7500 to Our Big Kitchen to assist in its efforts to provide relief for the victims of the Queensland floods.

In a letter to Rabbi Dovid Slavin who runs the commercial kicthen at the Sydney Yeshiva complex, Jewish Care’s CEO Bill Appleby wrote: “Jewish Care was delighted to hear of the wonderful efforts of Our Big Kitchen in terms of immediate impact on people’s lives who are both victims of the tragic floods and those emergency and third sector agencies assisting. Additionally, your response is allowing many people in the Sydney community an opportunity to give of their time in a meaningful, purposeful way.

Your organisation’s vision “to provide a place where people of all walks of life come together to create fun and meaning to serve others, to help them in times of crisis and celebration” resonates loudly with the vision and aspirations of the team at Jewish Care Victoria.

On behalf of the Board, Staff and Volunteers at Jewish Care Victoria we would like to donate $7,500 to assist in the purchase of raw food products for the production of food to give to those impacted by the floods.

Good on you for your wonderful contribution and generosity of spirit!”

Rabbi Slovin told J-Wire: “I am obviously over the moon at both the generosity of Jewish Care and their support in recognising the work that the community has done using the Our Big Kitchen facility to ease the load of those who continue to suffer in the aftermath of the floods in Queensland. The money will most certainly be put to good use.”

His thoughts were echoed by the CEO of the care organisation The Jewish House, Rabbi Mendel Kastel. He said: “Our expertise and experience have been made readily available to Ari Heber who runs the Queensland Jewish Community Services organisation who have been working in conjunction with us for some time. We are currently working with community members now suffering mental problems in Brisbane…and I have no doubt there will be more facing us in the future. We need all the help we can get.”
