The Australian reports that four motions drafted by the Socialist Left will be debated at the Victorian ALP’s conference this weekend.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to attend.

The Australian has named the motions.

“Justice for Palestine – Right to Self-Determination”, “United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees”, “International Court of the Justice” and “Illegal Settlements”.

Peter Wertheim

The co-CEO of The Executive Council of Australian Jewry, Peter Wertheim, commented: “The current war between Israel and Hamas began with a premeditated attack by the Palestinian terrorist organisation against Israel, and the mass slaughter of Israeli and other civilians.

It is hard to understand how the Victorian ALP could ever entertain a series of motions which seek to whitewash the crimes of the aggressor and condemn the side which is defending itself against the openly declared threat of further atrocities.

There is no mention, let alone condemnation, of Hamas’s acts of rape, torture, mutilation and butchery of Israeli women, children and whole families, or of Hamas’s use of Palestinian civilians as human shields.

Federal ALP leaders have rightly stated that there can be no role for Hamas and the other Palestinian terrorist groups in the future governance of Gaza, but if these motions were ever taken seriously that is precisely the result that would follow.

They are a moral stain on the party that will only be removed if they are voted down decisively.”
