U.S. showing interest in “In My Pocket”
Perth-based Eli Rabinowitz has returned from the US, where he met with directors of key organisations showing interest in the In My Pocket project.
The project is unique in that it transforms a simple autobiographical book into an engaging learning experience, giving an age-appropriate stepping stone into later studies of the Holocaust.
The In My Pocket Project provides students with an understanding of the story of the Kindertransport and of the plight of refugees, particularly children, today. Each participating student receives a free copy of the mini-book, and in the art component of the project, designs and paints their own “pockets”.
In My Pocket is a true story written by Dorrith Oppenheim Sim, who was on a kindertransport to the UK from Kassel, Germany, in 1939. Dorrith was 7 ½ when she arrived in Scotland. She never saw her parents again.
He said: “I received a strong interest in the In My Pocket book and the accompanying project during my recent trip to the US where I visited New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Phoenix and Los Angeles.
I met with Rabbi Abraham Cooper, director of the Museum of Tolerance in Beverly Hills, Mary Pat Higgins, president and CEO of the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, Rabbi Jeffrey Schesnol of the Cutler Plotkin Heritage Centrein Phoenix, and Abby Gilbert, director of HAMEC, The Holocaust Awareness Education Centre in Philadelphia.
The German Consulate General in Houston has asked the WE ARE HERE! Foundation to submit a proposal to supply participating elementary students with free In My Pocket mini books, as we have done in Australia and South Africa.
In Australia, the German Ambassador, Beate Grzeski, has been personally handing out In My Pocket books and the German language version, In Meiner Tasche, to educators around Australia. The Goethe Institute in Australia is also participating in promoting In My Pocket / In Meiner Tasche.
Eli and Jill Rabinowitz created and run the WE ARE HERE! Foundation.
Amazing dedication Eli & Jill! Incredible work! Kol hakavod!
