Turnbull skips ECAJ conference

The political turmoil embroiling Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull will keep him in Canberra today…forcing the cancellateion of his scheduled appearance at the Executive Council of Australian Jewry annual conference.New South Wales Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell has accepted the Council’s request to replace Turnbull at the Sydney Conference at short notice.

There has been a changing of the guard in Western Australia and Queensland.

Tony Tate has taken over from Keith Shilkin as President of the Jewish Community Council of Western Australia and Jason Steinberg replaces David Paratz as president of  the Queensland Board of Deputies.

The conference was opened by ECAJ president Robert Goot. Guest speakers included Associate Professor Greg Rose fro the University of Wollongong whose topic was “The Laws of War in the Age of Terrorism, Doctor Carl Ungerer who dealt with the question “Is the Threat if Terrorism in Australia Reducing?”, Canadian visitor David Matas on “Advocacy for Israel and Human Rights in the Contemporary World”.

Israel’s ambassador to Australia, Yuval Rotem, spoke on the current situation in the Middle East.
