A fire swept through a section of the mansion of the Gandel Family in Toorak on Saturday night…estimated to cost Tony Gandel, former Managing Director of the Gandel Group, almost $1 million dollars in repairs.

It required 33 firemen to control the blaze on the roof of the 200 square-metre house, originally believed to have been caused by the TV in the Theatre Room. However; the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB) have now determined it was not the cause, and will launch an investigation.

“Damage was contained to less than half of the roof along with some heat, smoke and water damage to rooms located below,” said MFB Acting Commander, Tony Cowling

Cowling added, “A specialist investigator will attend in the morning to determine the exact cause of the fire.”

According to media reports valuable artworks in the vicinity of the fire were removed and incurred no damage….
