The Mexican football team for next week’s Maccabi Australia International Games arrived in Sydney this morning…but for Freddy Sacal, they will be Games of hope.

Freddy Sacal

The 17-yr-old striker from Mexico City injured his toe in a match a week ago and doctors have told him he has only a 50/50 chance of playing. “It doesn’t matter”, he told J-Wire, “as long as I have a chance to play I was happy to come and now it is a matter of doing my best to get match fit.”

For delegation head Yossi Bernstein this is a case of deja-vu. He said: “I lost the use of one of my best baseballers through injury…he could not compete in the Maccabiah in Israel as he broke his shoulder just before we were due to play.”

The Mexicans were joined at the arrivals hall at Sydney Airport this morning by athletes from Israel and Canada with Brazil due in later today.

In the meantime, Sacal will have to spend the next few days on crutches…and praying for a rapid recovery from his injured foot.
