The U.S. bans UNRWA funding for a year
Shortly after Australia decided to lift a ban on funding UNRWA, the United States announced that its ban on the United Nations Refugees and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East would remain for one year.
Calling for UNRWA to be “defunded and dismantled”, Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said: “The US Congress has passed a 1 year ban on funding UNRWA, which hopefully signals the beginning of the end for a corrupt, inept bureaucracy whose facilities double as weapons depots and whose staff moonlight as Hamas killers.
Crucially, the package does not cut aid to Gaza. It merely redirects it to other humanitarian projects to ensure that the aid gets to the right places and taxpayer dollars don’t end up in the pockets of terrorists. All governments should follow this lead.
Mr Ryvchin added that the Australian government’s restoration of funding to UNRWA is a “serious mistake that will allow Hamas to again hijack aid distribution to fatten its leaders and heap more suffering on its own people for propaganda.”
While itself suspending funding for HAMASUNRWA, the USA urged other governments to step into the breech.
