The Great alive with the sound of music
Australia’s highest-profile piano quartet will perform together for the very first time, uniting SSO’s Concertmaster Andrew Haveron, ACO Principal Violist Stefanie Farrands, QSO Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici and international concert pianist Konstantin Shamray when Sydney’s The Great Synagogue presents its second concert of the year.
They will breathe new life into timeless masterpieces, including the sultry Hungarian dances of Brahms as well as his vigorous first piano quartet in G minor, the hot-blooded music of Kodaly and Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 – specially arranged for the evening. You can expect some program surprises along the way, too, as the Live team keep their repertoire fluid and flexible.
Artistic Director Vladimir Fanshil told J-Wire: “It has long been a dream of mine to present a concert of gypsy-inspired music in Sydney. What a thrill to have this constellation of four acclaimed soloists playing together for the very first time, which is very appropriate given the starry vaults of the Great Synagogue where they’ll be performing.”
The Live at the Great My Gypsy Soul concert will be held on Tuesday, 16 May at 7pm and repeated at 9:30pm atSydney’s Great Synagogue in Elizabeth Street.

Behind Live at the Great is the renowned conductor and pianist Vladimir Fanshil. He and his wife, opera singer Eleanor Lyons, are a dynamic musical couple who fought to keep music ‘live’ through the Covid pandemic, eschewing the move to virtual and online performances. They founded Live at Yours which offered intimate concerts in keeping with the Covid restrictions of the time and have since expanded to work with other new and unusual venues.
