Australia’s Ambassador to Israel, James Larsen, told the 300 people who attended the dedication ceremony of the new building for the Ahuzat Yeladi boarding school that it represented “part of the Australian story in Israel.”

The school itself was built in 1939, immediately caring for children orphaned when the Patria, a ship loaded with Jewish refugees, sank off Haifa with the loss of 260 lives.

The new compound will be home for Israeli children from underprivileged backgrounds including those  who have suffered physical and mental abuse.

Jo Gostin, President of Wizo Australia said: “Our dream has come alive.”
