The 80th anniversary of the deportation of Jews from Rhodes

Eighty years since the deportation to Auschwitz of Jews from the island of Rhodes will be marked at the Jewish museums in Melbourne and Sydney museums this month.

Former NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff will present at both events, speaking on the story of the Jews of Rhodes, as well as on the Holocaust in Greece more broadly. Alhadeff’s parents were born on Rhodes, with 151 Alhadeffs murdered at Auschwitz, including his paternal grandparents.

The Melbourne Holocaust Museum will commemorate the event on Sunday afternoon July 21, while the Sydney Jewish Museum will mark the deportation on Tuesday evening July 23.
The Sydney event will also feature Julia Sussman, CEO of Youth HEAR, who will discuss her rece nt visit to Rhodes, with music by Chutney Unplugged and talented vocalist Sarit Michael. The Sydney event is being held in partnership with Youth HEAR, the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and the Consulate-General of Greece, and supported by Andre and Eva Jaku in honour of Eddie and Flore Jaku.
The Jewish populations of Rhodes and Kos were deported to Auschwitz on July 23, 1944; 1604 people were murdered and just 150 survived.
