Among those attending the Friday evening service were NSW Police Jewish Chaplain Rabbi Mendel Kastel, federal MP Allegra Spender, state MP Ron Hoenig and Waverley councillor Leon Goltsman.

Ahead of the beginning of Shabbat, members of the NSW Police band surprised guests and the Central congregation with a medley of well-known Jewish music.

CEO of The New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies  Darren Bark addressed the congregation. He said: “It is thanks to the police presence at our shules and to the amazing work behind the scenes, together with our CSG, that our wellbeing was and continues to be protected.

But while this is something that we see happening a few days in the year – make no mistake. It is everyday, that those in blue ensure that our wellbeing is preserved and maintained. It is those in blue that run towards danger, while others run away from it. Everyday. For all of us. No matter what.

While we prioritise the things we love to do most on a day-to-day basis, they are not possible without a safe and secure home to do them from.

So on behalf of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies and the Jewish Community, kol hakavod. Thank you for serving with dignity and distinction.”

A special mention was made of those who had fallen while performing their duties.
