Tasmania: Holocaust Education and Interpretation Centre given the green light
The Rockliff Liberal Government in Tasmania will soon develop a Holocaust Education and Interpretation Centre (Centre) at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery .
Minister for the Arts, Elise Archer, said the Tasmanian Government has now successfully secured $2 million under the Commonwealth Community Development Grants Program for the Centre, a commitment made by the former Federal Liberal Government, and honoured by the now Federal Labor Government.
“The Centre will educate the public, particularly school students living in Tasmania, about the atrocities associated with the Holocaust,” the Minister said.
“It will also honour the six million Jews and other innocent victims murdered, and pay tribute to the legacy of survivors.
“The Centre will demonstrate the importance of tolerance by raising awareness of the lessons learned from the Holocaust and other genocides.”
“A Holocaust education facility will help the Tasmanian community, including students and young people, to understand the roots of discrimination and prejudice, and the need for empathy, understanding, and respect for all,” Hobart Hebrew Congregation President, Jeff Schneider said.
The Minister said TMAG will lead the development of the Centre in close consultation with the Jewish Community in Tasmania and relevant stakeholders.
“The Centre will be situated in the Bond Store at TMAG, where the space will be transformed into an immersive audio-visual experience complemented by personal items from the local Jewish community,” the Minister said.
“Aspects will also be woven through TMAG’s other galleries with the core theme of the Holocaust expanded to include underlying issues such as resilience, tolerance, and intergenerational impact.
“We want to make sure that all Tasmanians have access to this important cultural offering and therefore, we will also be developing an online and outreach experience.
“I am so pleased to be delivering on this strong commitment to help ensure such atrocities like this never happen again.”
