The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra has confirmed that a 45-yr-old man from Melbourne is being held in custody following the murder of a woman in a room at the Dan Panorama Hotel in Tel Aviv.

The man is being held at Tel Aviv police headquarters on suspicion of murder. A spokesman for DFAT said: “He is scheduled to appear in court on 30 August 2011.  Embassy officials will attend court and meet the man at that time.  Officials will offer the man consular assistance. The identity and nationality of the victim has not been disclosed by police.  The Embassy is working to verify reports that the victim was an Australian woman.
