Sydney woman runner up in AFL Football Women of the Year Award
She brought a combined Israeli-Palestinian team to compete in the 2008 AFL International Cup…and this week Tanya Oziel was named runner-up in the 2009 AFL Football Women of the Year Awards.
The Sydney mother, who is executive director of the Peres Centre for Peace, became involved in 2005 when her son Chaim joined the Maroubra Saints.
She believes in football’s bonding power emanating from ventures such as the Peace Team and has fond memories of the combined side winning two out of their five games and being awarded a prize for best developing nations.
The Peace Team was the subject of a documentary made by Marc Radomsky and screened by Channel 10.
Oziel was honoured at the Essendon Women’s Grand Final lunch.
