Support from Allegra Spender
Allegra Spender, the Independent member of parliament for Wentwort, has voiced her support.
Since Saturday, Israel has endured an unprecedented wave of attacks, a level of conflict not witnessed for decades. The brutality of Hamas, a recognised terrorist organisation, is beyond understanding.
While the conflict is far from over, and the full extent of casualties is yet to be confirmed, we already know too many lives have been lost and many are still missing. More Jewish lives were lost on Saturday than on any day since The Holocaust.
I want you to know my thoughts are with our community, particularly those who have friends and family in Israel. I am aware that many individuals within our community are deeply distressed by the news they are witnessing and hearing. I urge everyone to reach out to friends and loved ones who may be struggling during these challenging times.
Israel has an inherent and fundamental right to defend itself and safeguard its citizens against these horrifying acts of terror. These are not acts of resistance. People should not let sympathy for the Palestinian’s legitimate aspirations for statehood blind them to the fact that Hamas remains dedicated to a Palestinian state where Israel does not exist.
I am encouraged by the support for Israel from across the international community and in Australia. I am particularly pleased that this evening the Sydney Opera House will be lit up as a symbol of support for Israel and the Jewish community. This is something I strongly advocated for. Australia must stand with Israel at this difficult time, and I will continue to advocate for solidarity and support for Israel with the Prime Minister and his government.
Our community is currently in mourning for the lives already lost and will continue to pray for those who are being held in captivity.
Many in the community will be concerned about security in Australia at this time. I wish to assure you I am in touch with the relevant Jewish organisations and will be doing everything I can to help ensure the safety of our community.
Wentworth community members with family and friends in Israel, please reach out to my office for support.
