Strong support for Victorian MP’s Friends of Israel Lunch
A record number of Victorian Members of Parliament joined the Parliamentary Friends of Israel Co-Convenors, Paul Hamer MP and David Southwick MP, the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and Zionism Victoria for the annual Rosh Hashanah lunch at Parliament House recently.
The lunch was attended by over 40 attendees including Victorian MP’s and Jewish Community leaders.
Jennifer Huppert, President JCCV spoke of the shared values of the Jewish and wider Victorian community, highlighting the joint mission of Victorian MP’s and the JCCV to strengthen multicultural understanding, combatting Antisemitism, whilst respecting and valuing differences across our community.
Sharene Hambur, President Zionism Victoria, spoke of opportunities of recent events in Israel and highlighted the research and innovation taking place in Israel and the potential for collaboration with the Victorian Government.
David Southwick MP and Paul Hamer MP were delighted with the attendance and highlighted their strong support of the Jewish community and the importance of sharing the Israel experience with their fellow MP’s. Broadening knowledge about the traditions and symbolism of Jewish Festivals and raising positive awareness about Israel are ongoing priorities.
Rabbi Gersh Lazarow, Senior Rabbi of Temple Beth Israel proudly explained the meaning of Rosh Hashanah impressively blew the shofar and encouraged all attendees to eat apple and honey together as a shared sign of a happy and peaceful new year in Australia and Israel.
