Starring role for Michaella
Sydney student Michaella Edelstein will star as Rapunzel in the upcoming production of Into the Woods at the Zenith Theatre in Chatswood.
Hers is just one the many cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s fractured fairy tale, to be presented by Chatswood Musical Society 1-9 May.Michaella is currently undertaking her 3rd year of Bachelor of music (Performance) in classical voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She has been in several professional productions, including Opera Australia’s Der Rosenkavalier (2010) and Werther (2009). She most recently played Rapunzel in the SCEGGS Darlinghurst production of Into the Woods (2011). As a recipient of the Dr Harris Phillip Greenberg & Olav Gurney-Jensen Scholarship for Opera, Michaella is continuing her studies in pursuit of a career.
Into the Woods, the original Broadway stage hit, was recently seen in an award-winning Disney film version.
When a Baker and his Wife learn they’ve been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell.
They swindle, lie to and steal from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk).
Everyone’s wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later – with disastrous results!
What begins as a lively, irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
