Israeli astrophysicist Avishay Gal-Yam has visited Sydney as a guest of Weizman Australia.

Avishay Gal-Yam

He addressed a public meeting at Isa Designs in Sydney.

Gal-Yam, a world-leading expert on supernovas, is currently exploring the genesis of chemical elements in the intense explosion captured in the first moments of a supernova.  Gal-Yam and his team comb the skies for supernovas and use spectrography to identify the presence of those elements by the colours that they emit at the time of the explosion.

Following a lecture on his research into how supernovas occur and the significant advances in research technology Dr Gal-Yam faced a Q&A session. The floor tapped into his knowledge of topics as dark energy, life on other planets and the impact of boycotts on Israeli academia.

Wiezman Australia (weizmann.org.au) represents the Weizman Institute of Science based in Rehovot Israel, and has access to visiting academics such as Doctor Gal-Yam who visited Australia to attending a highly specialised conference.
