Staff member leaves Mount Scopus under a dark cloud
Melbourne’s Mount Scopus College principal Rabbi James Kennard has written to the students’ parents advising them a staff member “no longer works at the College” following complaints from former students about “inappropriate conduct”.
According to the letter the former member of staff “had previously engaged in inappropriate conduct with secondary students, in breach of College protocols and policies dealing with staff and student interactions”.
Rabbi Kennard stated that an independent investigation took place and that the college had “reported these matters to all the relevant authorities”.
He wrote: “The College takes these complaints very seriously. We are taking any and all steps needed to understand the extent, and impact, of any such conduct on any current and former students. This type of conduct is wholly unacceptable and has no place in any school setting.
We have written to old Collegians and current students, to say that if they have had a similar experience, the College offers its support and assistance to them. We encourage you to discuss these matters with your children and if they would like to discuss their experience, they should contact the Principal, or the Deputy Principal – Head of Secondary, or the Director of Student Wellbeing.
Rabbi Kennard did not confirm reports that the staff member involved is male.
