Short and very sweet
Short+Sweet Sydney boasts a number of Jewish artists again in 2014 – this time with actors, writers and singers taking centre stage at the biggest short-form performing arts festival in the world.
With Cabaret and Dance joining the annual Theatre program in parallel festivals, there are more than 240 ten-minute pieces and 1000+ artists involved in two venues from January 8 right through to the March finals of the theatre program.
Short+Sweet Cabaret this year features three well-known Jewish community performers – all taking part in the ‘Wildcards’ stream of the fest with 2pm and 7.30pm shows on Sunday 12 January at the New Theatre in Newtown
Adam Szudrich – a professional Sydney writer and educator with a number of successful previous short plays and screen scripts to his name – presents his hilarious cabaret piece “Spermlife” with four more Sydney actors joining him onstage in a bittersweet (!) musical comedy about 5 sperm singing and dancing their way through adversity in ‘a journey of self-discovery that leads to hope and friendship’…
Actor and writer Maxine Appel – whose full-length play Holes and Soles was selected for showcase reading at the Ensemble Theatre this year – struts her stuff in “A Different Take on Musicals”… where she tells untold tales behind the Broadway shows we know and love. Surprises, secrets and funny facts… all told in song.
Teacher, linguist and chanteuse Evie Weltlinger also appears on the same program of 10 short pieces with “C’est la Vie, Life is ein Kabarett!” in which the self-described ‘voluptuous woman of a
certain age’ throws caution to the wind to sail into new territories in the mesmirising world of song. French, Yiddish, German and English and plenty of elan. Voila!
Meanwhile, over at King Street Theatre Newtown, up and coming young stage star Ricky Klein features in Short+Sweet Theatre with new Australian play “Elements Inc” by Jessica Fallico. It’s a quirky send-up of corporate life (with a serious message underneath) where the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – face their CEO, Mother Nature, who is not happy about the latest disaster statistics. Global warming and corporate greed all in ten minutes as part of a night of 10 short plays. It’s in Week 3 of the festival 22-26 Jan, Wed-Sat nightly at 7.30pm and Sunday at 5.15pm.
Short+Sweet Cabaret 8-19 January Wed-Sun at New Theatre, Newtown
Short+Sweet Theatre 8 January to 3 March Wed-Mon, King Street Theatre, Newtown (and 21,21 March Finals at the Seymour Centre)
