Seven-year-old Zachary’s mission to support the wounded
Seven-year-old Zachary Stern, a Year 1 student at Mount Sinai College in Maroubra, Australia, is turning personal challenges into a mission of compassion.
Diagnosed in 2019 with global developmental delay, which slowed his ability to meet developmental milestones, and recovering from a serious skull fracture sustained in a fall at age 2, Zachary has faced significant hurdles. Yet his journey has been defined by perseverance, radiant positivity, and a deep desire to help others.
This month, Zachary embarked on a fundraising campaign for ZDVO, an Israeli charity dedicated to supporting injured soldiers with medical care and family assistance. His efforts are part of Mount Sinai College’s school-wide initiative, where the charity committee selected ZDVO as its focus for this year.
Understanding the importance of the cause, Zachary has been personally calling friends and family and knocking on doors in his local community after school and sports practice. His goal? To raise $3,000 by Nov. 30. So far, he has collected $1,700 in just two weeks—a testament to his determination and empathy.
“He has a heart that truly feels for others,” said his mother, Karen Stern. His parents explained how he connects his fundraising efforts to current events, such as the ongoing war in Israel, where the family has relatives. “Zachary has heard about the war and understands that the money he’s raising will help soldiers get medical supplies and assist their families,” she added.
This effort also reflects Zachary’s personal growth since starting school. While his developmental delay and social challenges presented obstacles, Zachary has flourished academically and socially with the support of his school community. His parents describe him as a “happy, smiling little boy” with a passion for cars and a strong desire to help others.
ZDVO’s mission resonated deeply with Zachary and his enthusiasm has inspired his classmates and neighbours alike. Mount Sinai College, located in Maroubra, has encouraged students to take part in fundraising activities, making this a collective effort for a global cause.
