NSW Shadow Minister for Police and Shadow Minister for Counter-Terrorism Walt Secord expressed his alarm at the appearance of antisemitic conspiracy theorists at the Sydney weekend anti-lockdown rally.
A member of the public tweeted these images
Mr Secord was referring to photographs released on social media by AIJAC (Australia-Israel Jewish Affairs Council)showing several protestors carrying placards reading: “ABC News is Zionist propaganda” and “Don’t Submit to the Zionist World Order”.
“What we saw on the weekend was an insidious collection of anti-Semites, conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers and thugs clashing with police–and they deserve to feel the full brunt of the law,” Mr Secord said.
References to `Zionist World Order’ show that these are far-right wingers who believe and want to portray Jews as conspirators who aim to control the world. This is just crazy and sinister stuff inspired by the fabricated antisemitic text, the Protocols of Elders of Zion.”
Minutes after the weekend rally, Mr Secord issued a statement condemning the anti-lockdown Sydney protestors – and providing his full bipartisan support to the NSW Police and the Berejiklian Government. He also conveyed his support directly to the NSW Police Minister David Elliot shortly afterwards.
Mr Secord, who is also deputy chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel and NSW patron of the Labor Israel Action Committee said: “I hope that every single protestor’s image is captured on CCTV and the police hunt them down.
No one should be allowed to swarm, assault, threaten or throw items at the police who are out there enforcing public health orders aimed at saving lives.
I stand with our brave police officers and they have my full support.
This disgusting display was an attack on every single person working to save lives in the current COVID outbreak – from every single police officer to nurse to doctor to paramedic to hospital cleaner working their guts out to protect the community. The protests are an affront to all those putting their own lives on the line to save and protect others.
All these anti-lockdown protests do is risk prolonging the lockdown. We won’t get through this virus unless we follow the health advice.”
Mr Secord added that he supported comments by NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon who warned that NSW police would crackdown on anyone planning a similar demonstration.
