TV personality John Safran has spent his Passover in the Phillipines…being crucified.safrancrucifiedIn a small town outside Manila, the 33-year-old comedian was nailed to a wooden cross on Good Friday in an agonising ceremony in which Catholics seeking penance or seeking favours from the Church, voluntarily endure the gory process.

Safran, wearing a long wig with a crown of thorns and scantily-dressed was heard moaning as nails were driven through the palms of his hands. He had joined other willing victims in a procession complete with Roman centurions and flagellations. Safran was left hanging on the cross for five minutes before being rushed to a medical unit for treatment.

The ceremonies attract many tourists and are not formally endorsed by the Catholic church. Three local men from Kapitangan town were also crucified.

Safran is yet to announce why he did this.

He hosts a weekly talk talk show on ABC’s Triple J network with Catholic priest Father Bob Maguire.
