Safer Shabbat in East Bentleigh
The Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) is pleased to announce that it has successfully liaised with VicRoads to have an additional pedestrian crossing made safer for those who keep Shabbat. The pedestrian crossing at Brady Road and Centre Road in East Bentleigh is now automated on Friday evenings, Saturdays and Jewish festivals to allow Orthodox pedestrians to cross the road without needing to press the ‘green man’ button in breach of Shabbat.
The JCCV contacted VicRoads following a request from a concerned member of the community.
JCCV President Nina Bassat AM said: “We are pleased that we have been able to organise for yet another crossing to be automated. As the voice of Victorian Jewry, we value and take responsibility for the safety of every member of our community, from antisemitism, discrimination and alcohol abuse to the more everyday hazards posed by motor vehicles.”
“It is most satisfying to see the good relations we have developed with government and its agencies bear fruit in practical ways such as this that benefit the community,” she added.
Bassat concluded by saying that she will be thanking the Government for its continued support of our community when Nicholas Kotsiras, Minister for Multicultural Affairs & Citizenship, attends the JCCV Plenum on Monday.
