Sadie Weiner 1926-2023
Sadie Weiner — beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother — passed away on May 15 in Perth. She was 96 and lived independently until the final few weeks of her life.
She was born Sadie Navias on August 9, 1926, in Johannesburg, South Africa, before living in Cape Town. She volunteered for the Union of Jewish Women; and worked in bookkeeping and business management in the hotel industry along with Norman Weiner, her husband for nearly 50 years.
In 1983, Sadie moved to Australia. A master bridge player, she once secured a third-place finish in a competition for the entire state of Western Australia. Her other interests and passions included ballroom dancing, ice skating, and travel. She was a voracious reader and healthy eater who was highly principled and disciplined in her lifestyle, habits, and routines.
She is fondly remembered as fiercely loyal to her children; a loving and devoted “Nana” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and accepting; and reliable. She experienced many losses but always maintained a positive attitude and made a point of celebrating life.
Sadie Weiner’s vast and continuously growing family tree represents a cornerstone of her legacy. She is survived by her children Leslie Weiner (married to Sally Weiner), Sharon Horowitz, Suzanne Marcus (married to Brian Marcus), Michelle Oblowitz (married to Daniel Oblowitz), and Ivor Weiner (married to Joy Weiner); her grandchildren Tamarin Michel (married to Jonathan Michel), Lara Vinnicombe (married to Mark Vinnicombe), Cassie Oblowitz (and partner Yoel George), Gavin Weiner, Bianca Zietsch (married to Michael Zietsch), Ariella Weiner, Zach Weiner, Sacha Craig, Julie Glass (married to Jacob Glass), Lauren Marcus (married to Avi Heller), Megan Marcus (married to Jacob Kamaras), Gracie Kovo (married to Elan Kovo), and Layla Weiner; and great-grandchildren Raphael, Ezra, Aiden, Gia, Hartley, Mason, Dayna, Elliott, Aurora, Xyla, Javen, Silas, and Costa.
