Russian diplomats accuse Lapid of ‘double standards’ and ‘contempt for Palestinian lives’
Russia’s embassy in Cairo had harsh words for Prime Minister Yair Lapid following Israel’s Operation Breaking Dawn against the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip over the weekend, accusing him of “double standards” and “contempt for Palestinian lives.”
The Russian embassy in Egypt, on its Twitter account, called to “compare Yair Lapid’s lie about Ukraine in April and attempts to blame and responsibility on Russia for the deaths of the people in Bucha who were brutally killed by the Ukraine Nazis, with his calls in August for the bombing and strikes on the Palestinian lands in the Gaza Strip. Isn’t that double standards and complete disregard and contempt for the lives of the Palestinians?”
In April, following the massacre in Bucha, Ukraine, which was committed by the Russian Army and left behind approximately 1,300 dead, including 31 children, Lapid stated that “intentionally harming a civilian population is a war crime, and I strongly condemn it.”
Later that month, Lapid described the images and testimony coming from Ukraine as “horrific” and accused the Russian military of committing war crimes against a “defenceless civilian population,” adding that he “strongly condemns these war crimes.”
This harsh statement by prominent Russian officials came less than 24 hours after Israel’s President Isaac Herzog spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following motions by the Russian Ministry of Justice to ban the activities of the Jewish agency in the country.
The phone call was initiated by Herzog at the request of Lapid and in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Russia’s Ministry of Justice requested last month the liquidation of the Russian branch of the Jewish Agency, which helps Jews immigrate to Israel. The Ministry of Justice believes that the Jewish Agency “violated Russian law in its work.”
Some reports claim that Russia is upset that Lapid became prime minister. Several sources have noted that Russia’s pressure on the Jewish Agency began after Lapid entered office. Russia’s ambassador to Israel reportedly sent messages to Israeli sources saying that the Russians are unhappy with Lapid as prime minister because of his statements against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
