Prime Minister Scott Morrison has sent a message to Australia’s Jewish community on Rosh Hashanah.

Scott Morrison

On the occasion of Rosh Hashanah, I express my deep admiration for the Jewish people of Australia.

I admire your intellectual spirit, your fierce love of freedom, and your devotion to your faith and advancement of humanity.

I admire your capacity to preserve millennia-old traditions while moving gently with the times. It is a strength to be able to renew with every generation.

I admire your commitment to do right by your families, by your friends, and by your community.

You are engineers and educators, scientists and soldiers, musicians and mathematicians.

You are young and old, orthodox and progressive, Ashkenazi and Sephardic.

You are one community with many identities, much like Australia itself.

It is people like you that bring out the best Australia has to offer.

In an increasingly polarised world, this is a testament to the idea at the heart of our nation’s compact – that people of all backgrounds, cultures and faiths can live and thrive together.

As you mark the start of the High Holy Days, I hope the coming year is good, sweet and peaceful.

And as the shofar sounds in synagogues across our nation, I hope we might all more richly embrace the undercurrent of love that flows through all faiths and that defines our common humanity.

Shanah tovah u’metukah.
