Repairs underway in Christchurch
Work has begun on repairs to the cash-strapped Canterbury Hebrew Congregation’s synagogue in Christchurch which was severely damages in the earthquake two years ago.
Bettina Wallace told J-Wire that the congregation’s numbers are on the rise.
She said: “The repairs will take a few months and we hope to be able to move out of our temporary premises and start using the community hall in about three months and the main sanctuary shortly after that.”
But all is not rosy for the South Island community. The ark cannot be repaired and shoring up its foundation will not render it safe. Wallace added: “It’s a rebuild not a repair. We don’t have enough money to do this and this insurance payout will not cover the cost…so once again we are looking for donations.”
