Record Number of Graduates from Aged Care Course at Jewish Care
A record number of students have graduated from the Certificate III in Aged Care and Home & Community Care course, hosted by Melbourne’s Jewish Care’s Employment and Education Centre.
17 students graduated from the course, which has been run three times through Jewish Care in partnership with Selmar Education Institute.
The course is a combination of classroom-based workshops and work placement at Jewish Care’s aged care residences and in-home services, where students are offered a job interview with Jewish Care once the course is completed – the only organisation to offer this currently. To date, six students have been offered positions within Jewish Care’s Residential and Community Aged Care services.
Service Development Manager Simon Jedwab said: “We are proud of all the students who have graduated and we thank them for their efforts while studying here. We are also proud to now have had over 50 graduates from the course since 2014.”
Mr Jedwab addressed the students: “You are embarking on careers in vital work essential to our society where we must be emboldened to take care of each other. Nothing is more important than this and we trust you to do so with intelligence, sensitivity and accountability.”
Graduate Rosalind Hkawn San, who recently emigrated from Malaysia was inspired to enter the industry by her grandmother, who was an army nurse. “The practical work experience of taking care of the residents was amazing and also helpful and useful when putting everything I had learned from the classroom into practice.”
Jenny Astorino, the course teacher said the students were a pleasure to teach.
“This class was unique as the students bonded exceptionally well, supporting each other through the learning and in the practical placement process. They have not only helped each other gain their Certificates, but have made true friends with similar interests for life. I wish them the very best in their new careers,” Jenny said.
