Rally at Sydney University passes peacefully
The “March for a Safe Campus” at the university of Sydney was a resounding success with more than 500 supporters defying the weather conditions and vocal opposition.
The event was organised by Together with Israel and StandWithUs.
Executive director of StandWithUs, Michael Gencher, told the participants: “This was not just a protest but a profound demonstration of our collective commitment to ensuring a safe and inclusive educational environment. It was a gathering marked not only by numbers but by the courage and spirit of all who attended. Despite the complexities of the situation, including the concerning rise in antisemitic and anti-Israel activities on campus, you showed up in solidarity.
We are immensely thankful to the University of Sydney administration for their exceptional efforts in keeping the event safe and peaceful. Their presence was instrumental in allowing our voices to be heard in a respectful and meaningful manner.
Our march today goes beyond just one event; it is a pivotal moment in our ongoing commitment to advocate for the safety and well-being of Jewish students, faculty, and staff at the University of Sydney and beyond. The issues of intimidation, discrimination, and violence on campus are urgent and require immediate attention and action.
We call upon the university administration and all related stakeholders to take decisive steps towards fostering an environment where academic freedom and personal safety reinforce each other, where every student and staff member can thrive without fear.
For those who could not join us today but supported from afar, your support was equally important. Let’s continue to stand together against bigotry and for the rights and safety of all university community members.
