Queen of Tropfest
Evelyn Krape was selected as joint best actress at Sydney’s Tropfest short film festival for the seven-minute dark comedy Can You Hear Me?
Can You Hear Me? was one of 16 finalists in the annual short film festival held in Parramatta and was won by Melbourne filmmaker Brendan Pinches for his film Be You T Fool.
In the film, Evelyn stars as June, a grandmother who gets a hearing aid for the first time. When her family arrives at her home for dinner, she soon realises some things are better left unheard.
Evelyn tied for Best Female Actress with Shabana Azeez (Crush) on the night. They each received a $3000 prize donated by Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman.
Evelyn has starred in plenty of productions since the 1970s, including voicing Old Ewe in Babe, and parts in Blue Heelers.
“I have spent most of my acting career involved in live performance, so it was a great thrill to receive a Best Actress award for film. And what a film – a revenge movie where the female protagonist is a geriatric heroine! Bring on the sequel … ah it would have to be in heaven!” Evelyn
The Tropfest festival ended up being moved to another part of the park after storms hit Parramatta the night before the event, parts of their screen and stage were damaged; but as they say the show must go on – and it did!
