Among the large crowd were rabbis from across Sydney and local and state politicians. Tributes were paid by several people including Rabbi Ulman of the Sydney Beth Din, Board President Mironne Golan, and Ada Berger from Kadima Gardens.

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of a portrait of Rabbi Lewin by Ann Milch, a long-time member of the congregation.

Speaking after the portrait’s unveiling, Rabbi Lewin acknowledged the incredible journey he has shared with the community, stating, “It is hard to believe that 20 years have passed since I first had the privilege of becoming a part of this incredible community. “He emphasized the communal effort in his growth, likening it to the saying that it *takes a village to shape a life and a career.”

Throughout his speech, Rabbi Lewin expressed deep appreciation for the mentors and leaders who guided him, saying, “I owe a debt of gratitude that words cannot fully capture.” He specifically paid tribute to Rabbi Ulman. Rabbi Lewin also highlighted the strong partnership with Chazan Zvi Teichtahl, stating, “Together we have built a beautiful, inspiring and welcoming service for all that attend our shul.”

Special recognition was given to his predecessor, Rabbi David Rogut whom Rabbi Lewin described as a mentor whose “sage advice…guided me in the role.” He also acknowledged his family, particularly his wife, Talya, saying, “Thank you for being my wife, the mother of our children, my confidant and best friend. You truly are the fulfillment of King Solomon’s Eishet Chayil.”

Rabbi Lewin also thanked the synagogue president, Mironne and the Board of Management for the incredible honour of a portrait. “Every day, when I walk into the office and see the paintings of my predecessors, I am filled with a sense of responsibility to carry on their legacy within our community. I never dreamed that I would share the wall with them.”

Looking back on his journey, Rabbi Lewin shared his lifelong commitment to sharing the beauty of Judaism, a path he chose 35 years ago. He expressed his excitement for the future, concluding with gratitude to the community for making the past 20 years so meaningful: “Thank you for believing in me, for standing by me, and for making these past 20 years so meaningful.”

He continued “The words of Pirkei Avot remind us that “the world stands on three things: on Torah, on service, and on acts of loving-kindness.” Over the past two decades, I have strived to embody these principles, serving not only as a teacher of our sacred texts, leader of the services, but as a mentor who listens, advises, and supports each of you through life’s many challenges and celebrations.”

In conclusion, Rabbi Lewin stated: “As we look ahead to the future, I am excited about the possibilities that lie before us. With your continued support, guidance, and friendship, I know that we can achieve even greater things together.

Here’s to the future and to the many more years of service, friendship, and shared memories that await us.”
