In times of emergencies, it is for Parliament to discuss and decide the appropriate course of action, not one or two authoritarian individuals with concentrated power, which goes against everything we believe in. The president of the Victorian Bar has slammed the State’s new pandemic legislation as “appalling”. Top lawyers say the Victorian government’s proposed pandemic laws will give politicians “a blank cheque to rule by decree”; and run counter to basic democratic principles.
