Palestinian support group calls for Jerusalem Quartet boycott
The Australian Friends of Palestine Association wants Australians to boycott next month’s tour by the world-reknowned Jerusalem Quartet. Two of the Quartet’s musicians are members of an orchestra founded jointly by Jewish pianist Daniel Barenboim and Palestinian Edward Said. The orchestra is a joint Israeli-Palestinan cultural venture.
A spokesperson for Musica Aviva told media that two of the musicians do not live in Israel.
But the Palestinian support group has told media that “the group is seen as a cultural ambassador for Israel so a boycott is a matter of principle.”
Protests are nothing new for the Quartet having experienced them in many parts of the world. They will tour extensively throughout Australia in November with performances scheduled for Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Hobart.
