Painting a portrait of Rabbi Paul Lewin
Renowned local artist Ann Milch has completed a portrait of Rabbi Paul Lewin, marking his twenty years of dedicated service to Sydney’s The North Shore Synagogue’s congregation.
The new addition to the synagogue’s gallery will be unveiled on Sunday, 25 August 2024 at 3:00pm at an afternoon tea to which all congregants and friends are invited.
Ann Milch, a congregant for four decades, has previously painted portraits of two of the synagogue’s former Rabbis, enriching its historical narrative through her art: Rabbi Dr. Alfred Fabian OBE (1962-1975) and Rabbi David Rogut OAM (1975-2003), who continues to serve as Emeritus Rabbi.
Rabbi Paul Lewin was born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa. He spent a decade studying at Yeshivat Har Etzion in Israel, earning a BA in Psychology and a Diploma of Education. In 1994, Rabbi Lewin returned to South Africa to establish the Yeshiva of Cape Town.
In 1999, Rabbi Lewin moved to Australia and began a role as the Head of Informal Jewish Education at Masada College and Youth Rabbi at Kehillat Masada. In 2004, Rabbi Lewin was appointed Senior Rabbi of The North Shore Synagogue, a role he continues to fulfil. He also serves as the College Rabbi at Masada College, teaching students of all ages.
