On the the other hand

We woke up at 5 a.m. last Sunday to the loud sound of planes and instinctively realized that something major was underway.

Sure enough, the news of an Israeli pre-emptive strike against an imminent Hezbollah missile and drone barrage confirmed our suspicions.

Having been invited to a wedding in Ashkelon, which is a mere 21 km from Gaza, the question on everybody’s mind was whether the chuppah would take place and, if so, how many guests would turn up.

Exemplifying the real spirit of Israelis we need not have worried. The wedding took place, all the locals turned up and the music blared forth at top decibels. One of the most moving parts of the marriage ceremony was the prayer for the soldiers of the IDF battling terrorists in the north and south of the country. Listening to this prayer as the country faces major threats is a most moving experience, especially as we were within rocket range of Hamas.

The spirit of defiance and solidarity with those impacted by the current situation is something which only those living in Israel can truly experience.
