On the other hand
Have you ever purchased items from a family-owned and staffed shop, as opposed to a supermarket or a store which is part of a large chain?
These days there are hardly any such places in existence but in Israel they still can be found. Not only do most of them offer service with a personal touch but often if you are lucky, the price of the purchase can be negotiated.
This is what happened to us this week when we went looking for something in a Jerusalem hardware shop. Having found what we were looking for and with the assistance of one of the staff confirming that indeed it was what we actually wanted it came time to pay. Upon discovering that we were “vatikim” loosely translated as “old timers” as far as age is concerned, the cashier gave us a discount.
All this was accomplished by light-hearted banter and smiles.
A truly “only in Israel” experience.
ALBERT EINSTEIN RETURNS
The Hebrew University on Mount Scopus was officially opened in 1925 in the presence of many distinguished guests, including Albert Einstein. After his death, he bequeathed his papers to the University.
At the groundbreaking ceremony held recently for the proposed Einstein House Museum at the university an actor taking the part of Einstein addressed the assembled visitors.
